Quite a few parodies of Old Mother Hubbard go around, but the most common seems to be:
Old mother hubbard went to the cupboard
to get her poor dog a bone
when she leaned over, rover took over
and gave her a bone of his own
That was known in my high school, and has been recorded back to at least 1961 by Sherman.
well mine is a little bit more kiddish than the one above
ReplyDeleteold mother hubbard went to the cupboard

but when she got there the cupboard whas bare
and the poor little dog had none
Old Mother Hubbard went to the cupboard
ReplyDeleteto get her poor daughter a dress,
but when she got there, the cupboard was bare,
and so was her daughter, I guess.
Omaha Ne. 1980s
Wow, I never would have guessed that was so old! I'd always assumed it was Andrew Dice Clay's own material. Wonder about some of his other Mother Goose stuff now.

ReplyDeleteWhen she got there the cupboard was bare and the dog had a bone of its own. Freeport High School NY by 1966. Also the rhyme about the Mother Hubbard and her daughter's dress as an alternate version from the same era.
